A magnetic building-block approach

The filing describes an input module that attaches to the controller at various positions, secured by magnets. Beyond operating as an extra set of controls, the module could also function as a compact notification display. The concept extends well beyond a simple screen accessory, however.

Sony’s design envisions individual control elements—such as joysticks or keypads—that can be arranged directly on the pad in different layouts. The guiding idea is to serve a wider spectrum of ergonomic preferences and physical needs, potentially offering greater flexibility for players with limited mobility. A familiar shape with new flexibility

This keeps the device more traditional in hand feel than more radically reconfigurable products like the ByoWave Proteus, which breaks the controller into repositionable clusters. By preserving a fixed overall shell, the suggested design may appeal to those who want customization without sacrificing a familiar grip and button layout.

As with any patent filing, the document indicates Sony is investigating potential control concepts rather than confirming a future product. It remains entirely possible that this modular vision never advances beyond the research stage.
