Microsoft is expanding its PC Game Pass library with a surprise day-one title, adding a colony management experience with roguelite mechanics to the subscription service. While the company typically schedules new reveals at the start and middle of each month, this latest addition comes from studio Wild Fields and publisher Hooded Horse as an unannounced drop.

A Mobile Colony on a Hostile Ocean

The new release, titled Rogue Carrier, casts players as the leader of an interstellar expedition that has veered catastrophically off course. Stranded on an uncharted ocean world, the mission pivots sharply from scientific study to a raw fight for survival. Players must manage a sprawling mobile settlement built aboard a colossal seafaring vessel, balancing resource extraction, production chains, crew welfare, and colony defense while searching for a way to escape.

Shipbuilding and Strategic Space Management

Central to the gameplay is the construction and continuous upgrading of the carrier itself. Players can choose from over 80 distinct building options—ranging from farms and housing to factories, solar panels, and battery arrays—each presenting different layout configurations and production advantages. The core challenge lies in the ship’s finite deck space, which makes careful spatial planning essential to avoid crippling inefficiencies.

Exploration-Driven Roguelite Progression

Exploration extends well beyond the carrier’s hull. Freighters and reconnaissance craft can be dispatched to investigate islands, ruined cities, and other scattered points of interest across the procedurally generated ocean. Player progression is structured as a roguelite loop, driven by a mix of main objectives, side quests, and technological research that unlocks additional structures, resources, and capabilities. Because the choices made during each run directly shape the pool of options available next, the game is designed to reward repeated playthroughs with divergent strategic paths.

A Reactive and Punishing World

Rogue Carrier also introduces an environmental reactivity system that responds to the player’s industrial footprint. Rapid, unchecked expansion or severe ecological damage can provoke tangible consequences, including violent weather patterns and increasingly aggressive wildlife. This feedback loop forces a more measured pace, penalizing players who try to overpower the planet rather than carefully adapt to it. While the developers have not yet set a firm release date—the title is currently listed as "Coming Soon"—PC Game Pass subscribers can expect to download it the moment it launches.
