Sony Interactive Entertainment has informed customers in the United Kingdom and Europe that it will permanently remove 551 films produced by StudioCanal from its PlayStation video library. Under the terms of an expiring licensing agreement, users will lose access to their previously purchased digital copies on September 1, 2026.

Titles affected and what customers should expect

The deletion covers a broad range of well-known features, including Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Rambo: First Blood, Bridget Jones’s Diary, Pan’s Labyrinth, and Paddington. An official statement on the company’s website reads: “From September 1, 2026, due to our content licensing agreements, you will no longer be able to access your previously purchased content from Studio Canal, and it will be removed from your video library.” The company has published a complete list of the affected films and has confirmed that no refunds will be issued for the revoked purchases.

A recurring challenge in digital storefronts

The removal underscores a persistent tension in digital media ownership, where permanent access to purchased content often hinges on the renewal of temporary licensing contracts. The decision echoes a similar move in 2022, when Sony pulled StudioCanal films from accounts in Germany and Austria, citing the same type of licensing conflicts. Those earlier removals drew criticism from consumer advocates who warned that digital storefronts can unilaterally erase paid content without compensation.

Regional scope and industry context

Sony has clarified that user accounts in the United States are not affected by the current action. However, American customers experienced a comparable situation in 2023, when the company initially announced it would strip Discovery content from the platform. That decision was reversed only after a new licensing agreement was reached. The latest round of removals serves as a stark reminder that even large digital libraries remain subject to the terms set by rights holders, leaving consumers with no guarantee of indefinite access to the titles they have bought.
