AMD is set to introduce its new Navi 44 GPU, which is a part of the RDNA 4 family, and it looks like it will be significantly smaller than its predecessor.
Size and Specifications
Leaked shipping details suggest that the Navi 44 measures approximately 29 x 29 mm, totaling around 841 square mm. This size reduction makes it about 31% smaller compared to the Navi 33, which was 35 x 35 mm. Even with this decrease in size, the Navi 44 is still around 25% larger than the Navi 24.
Performance Expectations
The Navi 44 chip is expected to be the driving force behind AMD's lower-tier Radeon 8000 series graphics cards, while the more powerful Navi 48 will cater to higher-end models. AMD is anticipated to unveil its top RDNA 4 cards at CES 2025 in January, with the Navi 44 models likely launching later on, possibly in the second quarter of the year.
Competitive Landscape
This new Radeon 8000 series will go head-to-head with NVIDIA’s Blackwell-based GPUs. Although specific performance numbers are still unknown, some industry insiders believe AMD may not directly target NVIDIA’s flagship RTX 5090 with its offerings.
On the other hand, NVIDIA is not idle, either. The RTX 50 series is set to launch in early 2025, boasting impressive upgrades like up to 36GB of GDDR7 memory and a rapid bandwidth of 1,536 GB/s, indicating a substantial improvement over the existing RTX 40 series.
AMD’s decision to reduce the size of the Navi 44 might suggest a strategy aimed at creating more efficient and compact designs for their entry-level graphics offerings.
