Published by Perfect World Games, known for their popular MMO, Perfect World, and their branch Hotta Studio, they have come together to launch Tower of Fantasy. This open-world action RPG, which includes MMO features, takes place in a future where humanity has abandoned Terra to inhabit a new world named Aida. In their attempt to control the energy of comet Mara, they constructed a tower to harness its power. Unfortunately, this resulted in a disastrous failure, leading to severe destruction for Aida’s residents, which triggered the “Omnium radiation disaster.” Players take on the role of a survivor in this setting.

    Mixed Responses from Players

The game faced a rocky start; users voiced their frustrations over its buggy performance, leading to a variety of mixed reviews. However, the biggest issue was the monetization methods, which were the final straw for many players. Gacha games are notorious for their excessive microtransactions, and a frequent problem with games that rely on MTX is that they are often designed to annoy players or push them towards spending money for progress or enhancements. This means players are more focused on spending rather than enjoying gameplay or story, with monetization tactics becoming more aggressive towards those willing to spend more—known as ‘whales’ in the industry. This did not sit well with both current and potential players. The game holds a sub-66% review rating on SteamDB, with Steam also indicating that recent English reviews are “mostly negative.”

    New Server Announcement

In response to the backlash, the company unveiled a new server named ‘Warp,’ aimed at eliminating the gacha elements and allowing players to experience the game more like an MMO. They posted on X, saying, “To meet the expectations of Authorizers for MMO gameplay.” According to their announcement, this server, “featuring a brand-new system and progression mechanics,” is set to launch on November 25th, alongside patch 5.5, “offering a freer and more authentic adventure in the MMO world.”

Players have not yet fully formed opinions on the new updates since they only launched on the 25th; however, a vocal minority is already expressing dissatisfaction, particularly concerning bugs that have persisted since the game’s 2022 release. One major issue involves players losing their accounts during a server migration. Users argue that the game failed to adequately inform them about these changes, resulting in lost accounts, many of which contained real-money purchases.

    Developer’s Response

This change in the monetization strategy appears to be the developer’s attempt to address an unhappy and shrinking player base. “It’s not just a new server; it’s a revolution in the game. We’ve removed the draw system for weapons and Matrices—you can just play and obtain all weapons, Simulacra, and basic appearances for free,” they stated on their X account. Tower of Fantasy is currently available for free on Steam, with the latest update having been implemented yesterday.
