Light-Up Clock Displays Time Without Hands

    Key Takeaways

    1. Collaboration with LoveFrom: Balmuda partners with Jonathan Ive’s design studio, LoveFrom, to create a modern clock inspired by traditional pocket watches.

    2. Innovative Time Display: The Clock features a unique dial that shows time using light instead of hands, highlighting the hour with illuminated numbers and the minutes with LEDs.

    3. Focus Timer and Soundscapes: It includes a focus timer that plays white noise and a Relax Time feature with three calming soundtracks inspired by nature.

    4. Gentle Alarm Function: The alarm gradually increases in volume over three minutes to wake users gently, and additional settings require the Balmuda Connect app.

    5. Portable and Rechargeable: The clock has a built-in battery lasting 24 hours, charges via USB-C, and will be available in Japan for approximately $370 in mid-April.

With The Clock, Balmuda teams up with LoveFrom, the design studio led by Jonathan Ive, who was once Apple’s design director, to present a vision of what a contemporary clock might be. This clock features a unibody case made of aluminum, measuring 7.5 centimeters on each side and weighing about 259 grams. Its design takes cues from the traditional pocket watch.

    Innovative Display

The dial of The Clock displays numbers from 1 to 12 but lacks hands. Instead, it utilizes light to indicate the time. The hour is represented by illuminating the corresponding number on the dial, while the minute hand is indicated by LEDs positioned behind lines along the outer edge. Additionally, this clock includes a focus timer that plays white noise for a set duration. A special feature called Relax Time offers three unique soundtracks specifically composed for this clock, drawing inspiration from sounds of thunder, rain, and crickets chirping.

    Gentle Awakening

The alarm function is thoughtfully designed to wake users up gently, gradually increasing the volume of the sound over three minutes. To set the alarm, change a time zone, or access other features, users need to download the Balmuda Connect app on their smartphones. The Clock’s built-in battery provides a 24-hour usage time without needing to be plugged in, and it charges through a USB-C port.

Balmuda The Clock is set to be released in Japan around mid-April, with a price tag of 59,400 yen (approximately $370).
