Together with the Aquos R11 smartphone, Sharp also unveiled its first smartwatch today. At first glance, the Karada Mate Watch’s design is reminiscent of conventional smartwatches, though Sharp has opted for a choice of silver or gold metal cases and a very minimalist user interface.
Calorie Tracking and Bioelectrical Sensor
In addition to typical smartwatch features, such as heart rate monitoring, step counting, and sleep tracking, the Sharp Karada Mate Watch boasts one particularly unusual feature: calorie tracking. It not only tracks calories burned through active and passive activity but, more importantly, also tracks calories consumed in the form of food and drinks. A bioelectrical impedance sensor (BIA) is designed to measure changes in water and sugar levels in the body.
Graphical Insights and Hydration Alerts
This allows the smartwatch to estimate how many calories have been consumed and how much fluid has been drunk. Sharp displays a graphical comparison of calorie intake versus calories burned, so users can see at a glance whether they are currently in a surplus or a deficit – handy if you’re trying to gain or lose weight. The watch also detects when you’re not drinking enough and alerts you.
Display, Sensors, and Compatibility
Sharp has integrated a round 1.32-inch OLED display with a resolution of 466 x 466 pixels and an always-on feature, an accelerometer, a GPS module, an ambient light sensor, a skin temperature sensor, and a heart rate and SpO2 sensor into the 11.9-millimeter-thick case, which is water-resistant up to 5 ATM. The watch is compatible with both Apple iPhones and Android smartphones.
Price and Release Details
The Sharp Karada Mate Watch (MH-W01) will be released in Japan on July 9, 2026, for a price of ¥59,400 ($370). No details regarding a potential international launch have been announced yet, though direct import is likely to be an option, as usual.
