MediaTek Launches Dimensity 8400 SoC for Redmi Turbo 4

MediaTek has launched the Dimensity 8400, marking the next step from last year’s Dimensity 8300. This new chip is aimed at the premium mid-range smartphone segment, offering notable improvements in performance and energy efficiency. It seeks to provide a flagship experience at a lower cost.

Upcoming Launch of Redmi Turbo 4

Xiaomi has announced that the Redmi Turbo 4 will be the first smartphone of 2025 to incorporate the Dimensity 8400-Ultra. The official launch date will be revealed on January 1st.

    Specifications of MediaTek Dimensity 8400

Now, let’s talk about the Dimensity 8400. This chipset features an all-big-core architecture, constructed on the latest Arm Cortex-A725 cores and has an impressive clock speed of 3.25GHz. This results in a 10% boost in single-core performance alongside a significant 35% drop in power usage, thanks to major upgrades in the chip’s cache system.

On the graphics side, the built-in Arm Mali-G720 GPU showcases a 24% increase in peak performance while also decreasing power consumption by 42%. This ensures a top-notch gaming experience. The new StarSpeed Engine smartly manages resource distribution in real-time, adjusting to the needs of every game to maintain smooth gameplay at 60 fps and keep the device cool.

    Advanced AI and Imaging Features

The chipset is equipped with the robust MediaTek NPU 880, which enhances AI capabilities for processes such as language model handling and image creation. With the Dimensity AI engine, it can manage complex on-device models, facilitating quicker and higher-quality content production, including functionalities like large language models and Stable Diffusion 1.5.

For photography, the chipset integrates the MediaTek Imagiq 1080 ISP image processor along with a dedicated QPD zoom hardware engine. This powerful duo allows for all-domain depth focusing, leading to more accurate and faster photography results.

The Dimensity 8400 is set to make a substantial impact on the mid-range smartphone landscape, offering an appealing combination of performance, efficiency, and advanced features. As the Redmi Turbo 4 takes the lead, we can anticipate a surge of exciting new devices powered by this robust chipset in the near future.

Redmi Turbo 4 Features and Specifications

Regarding the Redmi Turbo 4, it’s speculated to sport a 6.67-inch LTPS OLED display with a 1.5K resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and an in-screen fingerprint scanner. It might come with up to 12GB RAM and 512GB storage, along with a 6,550mAh battery supporting 90W fast charging, running HyperOS 2.0 based on Android 15. Rumors suggest that it will have a plastic frame and a glass back, with plans for a launch in China by early January 2025. For the global market, the device will be rebranded as the Poco F7.

Dimensity 8400 Specs Leak: Similarities to Dimensity 9400 CPU/GPU

Earlier this week, a report hinted that MediaTek’s next Dimensity 8400 SoC could use an all-big-core setup, similar to the more robust Dimensity 9400. Now, it appears that this rumor may hold some truth, based on a new insight from tech insider Digital Chat Station (DCS).

    CPU Architecture Insights

Today, DCS revealed information regarding the CPU structure of the new SoC, indicating a core design packed with ARM’s high-performance cores. The Dimensity 8400 is expected to come equipped with an octa-core CPU featuring a 1+3+4 configuration, manufactured on TSMC’s 4nm process. Central to its performance is the ARM Cortex-A725 core, which is clocked at over 3GHz.

    Core Configuration

Interestingly, it’s not just a single Cortex-A725 in this setup; MediaTek is reportedly bringing in three additional cores, each running slightly under 3GHz but still close to the primary core’s speed. For lighter workloads, MediaTek is said to be using three ARM Cortex-A720 cores, which are regarded as “premium efficiency” cores. This is a significant improvement from the Cortex-A510 cores utilized in the Dimensity 8300. These A720 cores are expected to function efficiently around the 2.0GHz range, making them suitable for everyday tasks. Even the Dimensity 9400 uses these cores.

    Graphics and Performance

On the graphics side, the Dimensity 8400 is likely to have some familiar features. It is rumored that the chip will incorporate the same GPU IP – the Arm Immortalis-G925 – as found in its more powerful counterpart, the Dimensity 9400. Whether it will maintain the same number of cores is still unknown. DCS also noted that the performance of the chipset is still being optimized, which means that the final clock speeds and performance metrics could still change.

At this point, it’s uncertain which smartphone will be the first to utilize the Dimensity 8400. However, speculation suggests it may appear in either the upcoming Redmi K80 series or Oppo’s Reno 13 lineup. We can anticipate more information about these devices, along with the final specifications of the Dimensity 8400, to emerge in the upcoming weeks. We will keep you posted on these developments.
