    The contest for the sleekest foldable smartphone was already claimed last year by Honor’s Magic V3. Samsung is also entering the race with the Galaxy Z Fold7, which prioritizes a slim profile, making it even sleeker than its Chinese rivals.

    Measurement Process

    We aim to dig deeper into this by measuring at specific points, as illustrated in the graphic below.

    The measuring locations (MP) were established using a standard caliper gauge. Along with the three foldables previously mentioned, we’re also including the Huawei Mate X6 in our assessment. For the Magic V5, we have the white variant, which is the only one with a lower height.

    Measurement Details

    Measurements are taken in the unfolded position on the side without a camera, centered along the long edge. The highest point (noted as ‘Camera’) in the closed position is recorded from the front glass to the camera. Any protective films that were on the front displays have been removed for accuracy.

    Measurement point 3 (MP 3) can be tricky for most foldables, as the cameras are situated very near to the edge.

    In our evaluations, the Galaxy Z Fold7 stands out as the slimmest foldable, with the Find N5 being just a tad flatter at its maximum height. The reigning champion, the Magic V5, takes second place here, but its camera module is among the most noticeable. Although the camera on the Mate X6 is the highest overall, its slightly bulkier design makes it less conspicuous than that of the Honor.

    Conclusions and Insights

    Ultimately, our findings revealed that the point of measurement is crucial. For instance, we discovered that in some areas, the Magic V5 is thinner than the manufacturer’s stated thickness (8.75 mm), while we measured the Samsung at just 8.50 mm in certain spots.

    It appears that Chinese manufacturers may have different measurement standards and sometimes forgo the protective film on the foldable screens. We hope to see greater transparency and more accurate specifications from these manufacturers. On the contrary, Samsung seems to align closely with its stated specifications.

It’s important to mention that foldable phone makers, including Honor, emphasize that users shouldn’t take off the inner screen protectors.

    Despite this, new information has surfaced revealing that the Magic V5 is actually thicker than the 8.95 mm reported by Ice Universe when the pre-installed screen protectors are factored in. A study by the Korean Consumer-Centered Enterprise Association (KCEA) and reported by Business Korea found that the Magic V5 measures 9.34 mm, even for its thinnest Ivory White model.

    Competing Models Also Thicker

    Similarly, the X Fold5 and Mate X6 are both over 0.5 mm thicker than what was advertised. Additionally, the Mix Fold 4 has been tested and found to be just 0.14 mm thicker than Xiaomi’s official claim of 9.47 mm. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Fold7, currently priced at $1,999.99 on Amazon, measures 8.82 mm, which is again less than Samsung’s stated dimensions. It’s worth noting, as mentioned by Android Authority, that Samsung is a member of KCEA. However, there’s no indication that the company influenced any of KCEA’s results.     One of the key reasons for its impressive battery longevity is the Find N5’s robust battery capacity, rated at 5,600 mAh. At the time, it was the only foldable device with the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset that we had tested. Recently, two other devices have launched, but they utilize the 8-core versions of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite, unlike the 7-core variant in the Oppo.

    Early Comparisons

    Initial evaluations suggest that the Find N5 continues to lead the pack regarding battery performance. As demonstrated in the images below, it significantly outperforms both the Galaxy Z Fold7 and the Magic V5. The underwhelming performance of the Galaxy Z Fold7 against the Find N5 is not surprising, given its 21% reduction in battery capacity.

    On the other hand, the Magic V5 comes with a battery of 5,820 mAh, but only if you choose the Chinese model that includes 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. Even though Honor’s newest foldable has a slight 4% edge in battery capacity over the Find N5, it still lags behind the Magic V3 and Galaxy Z Fold6, according to early findings from Hardware Zone. Specifically, the Magic V5 drains its battery 13% faster than its predecessor in the PCMark for Android’s Work 3.0 Battery Life test, and 10% faster than the Galaxy Z Fold6.

    Performance Mode Drawbacks

    Even more troubling is that the Magic V5 consumes its larger battery 21% quicker than the Find N5 in standard mode. Switching to performance mode further reduces battery life by an additional 15%, resulting in a staggering 33% difference compared to the Find N5.     None of these companies are misleading about the weights of their foldable devices. They simply do not include the weight of the inner screen protectors in their official numbers, similar to what is done with regular smartphones. It’s important to note that all manufacturers of foldables caution users against removing the inner screen protectors, as doing so can lead to damage of the displays.

    Interestingly, only Google has considered the weight of the inner screen protector with its Pixel Fold. According to data from Ice Universe, the Galaxy Z Fold7 does not meet Samsung’s stated weight of 215 g, falling short by just 3 g. This is better than the discrepancies seen with the Find N5, Magic V5, or X Fold5.

    Comparative Weights

    Ice Universe also indicates that the lightest version of the Magic V5 actually weighs 224 g when everything is taken into account. On the other hand, the white models of the Find N5 and X Fold5 are both at 236 g. Notably, the Titanium version of the X Fold5 drops to about 226 g due to using a fiber glass back instead of a full glass one. Nevertheless, the Galaxy Z Fold7 is still leading the pack in terms of actual weight, priced at $1,999 on Amazon, making it the standout in this category of foldable smartphones.

In contrast, neither Oppo nor Samsung has employed this strategy with either the Find N5 or the Galaxy Z Fold7.

    At this point, it’s still uncertain whether Honor will use Qualcomm’s 7-core variant found in the Find N5 or the more robust 8-core version utilized in the Motorola Razr 60 Ultra (currently priced at $899.99 on Amazon). The company has hinted that the Magic V5 will offer ‘PC-level productivity’ as well. Furthermore, it looks like Honor has chosen to debut its new foldable in the rumored ‘Silk Gold’ color. This new shade is expected to be released alongside Velvet Black, Tundra Green, and Snow White when Honor officially reveals the Magic V5 on July 2, which will also feature 80 W wired charging capabilities.
