Taara Launches Beam: 25Gbps Internet via Light Technology

    Key Takeaways

    1. Taara Beam is a small device that transmits high-speed internet wirelessly using near-infrared light, avoiding the need for physical optical cables.
    2. The device can deliver internet speeds up to 25Gbps over distances of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) and is designed for quick and easy setup.
    3. Taara focuses on a business-to-business model, marketing directly to internet service providers and mobile network operators.
    4. The Beam is 50% smaller than the previous Lightbridge model and offers faster speeds, although with a reduced range.
    5. Taara’s Lightbridge Pro system ensures 99.999% uptime in adverse weather conditions, enhancing reliability for users.

Formerly part of Alphabet’s innovative ventures, Taara has introduced the Taara Beam, a small device created for transmitting high-speed internet wirelessly. Utilizing near-infrared light, this projector-sized gadget seeks to deliver fiber-optic speeds to both isolated and city locations, completely avoiding the expensive and complex processes associated with installing physical optical cables.

    Impressive Speed and Design

This new gadget is notably swift, capable of sending internet data at a rate of up to 25Gbps over distances reaching 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). Despite its impressive capabilities, it only weighs 17 pounds and boasts a sleek and compact design. Setting it up is incredibly quick, as it can be mounted within hours on cell towers, poles, or the tops of buildings without the need for digging, spectrum licenses, or right-of-way permits. This adaptability makes it a perfect choice for rural regions, urban rooftops, enterprise campuses, data center clusters, and venues for events.

    Business Model and Comparisons

While it is often compared to SpaceX’s Starlink for remote connectivity, Taara adopts a business-to-business approach. The firm intends to market the technology directly to internet service providers and mobile network operators, rather than targeting individual customers directly.

    Technological Advancements

With a newly engineered chip, the Beam is now 50% smaller than Taara’s earlier Lightbridge model, which had a weight of 29 pounds. Although the Beam delivers faster speeds at 25Gbps compared to the 20Gbps of Lightbridge, it does sacrifice some range, reaching a maximum of 10km instead of Lightbridge’s 20km. Fortunately, the two systems can be seamlessly combined to provide extensive high-speed internet coverage for neighborhoods or entire cities.

    Reliability in Adverse Conditions

Traditionally, optical beams transmitted through the air are susceptible to bad weather, like thick fog. To tackle this challenge, Taara has recently unveiled its complementary Lightbridge Pro system, which guarantees a remarkable 99.999% uptime regardless of weather conditions. Taara plans to present its new products at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona to draw in enterprise clients, although they have yet to disclose the official pricing for the Taara Beam.
