Vintage Cage Turns Action Cams Into Retro Compact Cameras

    Key Takeaway

    – Movmax Vintage Cage makes action cameras look and feel like classic compact cameras
    – Mechanical shutter button works without batteries or electronic connections
    – Includes faux leather shell, strap eyelets, tripod mount, and a non-electronic hot shoe
    – Compatible with DJI Osmo Action 3–6 and Insta360 Ace Pro 2
    – Available on Amazon for $79.99

    Action Cams Getting Fancier

Action cameras have become increasingly feature-rich over the past few years. For example, the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 already features a 50-megapixel sensor in a 1/1.3-inch format, a Leica-branded lens, support for capturing DNG-RAW photos, and a flip-out display. Meanwhile, the DJI Osmo Action 6 boasts an even larger 1/1.1-inch sensor and a lens with a variable aperture ranging from f/2.0 to f/4.0.

    The Vintage Cage Solution

The Movmax Vintage Cage is designed to provide these cameras with a housing that more closely resembles a traditional compact camera. This is because the camera cage features a more ergonomic shutter button that simply mechanically activates the camera’s shutter. It also comes with a faux leather shell reminiscent of traditional half-shells found on rangefinder cameras, as well as eyelets for attaching a camera strap.

    Build and Mounting Details

The bottom features a threaded mount for attaching the camera to a standard tripod. The top, on the other hand, has a hot shoe that lacks electronic contacts but is still useful for attaching wireless microphones or LED lights. The cage is made of aluminum. To remove the camera from the cage, simply turn the wheel on top, after which the top can be flipped open.

    Availability and Pricing

The Movmax Vintage Cage is now available for $79.99. Movmax offers versions for the DJI Osmo Action 6, the Insta360 Ace Pro 2, as well as for the DJI Osmo Action 3, Osmo Action 4, and Osmo Action 5 Pro.

    • Compatible with: DJI Osmo Action 6
    • Compatible with: Insta360 Ace Pro 2
    • Compatible with: DJI Osmo Action 3, 4, 5 Pro
    • Material: Aluminum body with faux leather
    • Price: $79.99
    • Mounting: Standard tripod thread and cold shoe

    Eliminating Electronic Hassles

This design eliminates the need for either a battery or an electronic connection between the cage and the camera. The mechanical shutter button simply pushes the camera’s own button, which is a clever approach that keeps things reliable and simple for users who want that classic camera feel without any extra wiring.

Insta360 has refreshed its Ace Pro 2 with several new bundles after teasing their arrival just a few days earlier. To give some background, the company first unveiled the Ace Pro 2 in October 2024 as a competitor to the Hero 13 Black and Osmo Action 5 Pro, which is currently priced at $339 on Amazon. With the emergence of new competitors from GoPro and DJI, Insta360 is now offering its 8K action camera in these bundles:

    Flash Print Bundle

One of the most thrilling offerings is the Flash Print Bundle, which comes with Insta360’s latest Pocket Printer accessory. This printer connects to the Ace Pro 2 through Bluetooth and has similar hardware to the Polaroid Hi-Print, allowing users to create 3-inch polaroids on demand. However, it remains uncertain if you can turn off a Leica watermark.

    Upgraded Features

In addition to this, Insta360 has enhanced the Xplorer Grip into the Xplorer Grip Pro, which now includes exposure controls, a 1–2× slide zoom, and a longer-lasting battery. Insta360 Ace Pro 2: New Accessory Before DJI Osmo Action 6 Launch

    Key Takeaways

    1. DJI is set to launch the Osmo Action 6 next week, featuring improvements over the Osmo Action 4 and Osmo Action 5 Pro.
    2. Insta360 is preparing to enhance the Ace Pro 2 model with potential hardware upgrades after the Arctic White Edition update.
    3. A new Polaroid-inspired instant printer grip for the Ace Pro 2 will be unveiled on November 12, likely included in new bundles.
    4. The grip will include features like a knurled control dial, dedicated shutter button, and rocker switch for focus and zoom.
    5. Pricing and details about a true next-generation model from Insta360 remain undisclosed.

DJI is just a little over a week away from launching the Osmo Action 6, which comes with many improvements compared to the Osmo Action 4 and the newer Osmo Action 5 Pro. While the launch is set for next week, Insta360 seems ready to enhance its Ace Pro 2 model. After the Arctic White Edition update in September, the company is hinting at what seems like a hardware upgrade this time, even though the original Ace Pro 2 was released over a year ago (curr. $415 on Amazon).

    New Grip on the Horizon

Insta360 appears to be working on a Polaroid-inspired instant printer grip, which is scheduled to be unveiled on November 12. Based on the company’s previous updates, this new grip will likely be part of new Ace Pro 2 bundles rather than being sold alone. Meanwhile, some leaked images and teasers are giving us hints about what Insta360 plans to reveal on Wednesday.

    Features of the Grip

Up until now, it seems that the Ace Pro 2 has been fitted into a modular grip that looks like a small camera or similar device. The video below illustrates that the grip includes a knurled control dial for adjusting exposure or modes, a dedicated shutter button, and a rocker switch for focus and zoom adjustments. Additionally, this grip features a built-in instant printer, which will probably be a key selling point for Insta360. Unfortunately, the pricing is still a mystery, as is the information regarding a true next-generation model.

    1. The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 is a compact action camera, measuring 72 x 52 x 38 mm, making it easy to attach to handlebars or tripods.
    2. The new Xplorer Grip Kit improves handling and includes a wrist strap for secure one-handed use.
    3. The Xplorer Grip Kit features a cold shoe shutter button, allowing the Ace Pro 2 to operate like a traditional camera, though settings must be adjusted via the touchscreen.
    4. The Xplorer Grip Kit is priced at $84.99, while the Xplorer Bundle options are available for $419 (single battery) and $439 (dual battery).
    5. The Xplorer Grip Kit is compatible with both the Insta360 Ace Pro and Ace Pro 2.

The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 has been available for some time now, first introduced in October 2024. As we noted previously, the Ace Pro 2 is quite small, measuring 72 x 52 x 38 mm. This compact size makes it perfect for attaching to handlebars or a tripod, but it does leave little to hold onto when you’re using it by hand.

    New Accessory for Better Grip

In response to this issue, the company has launched the Xplorer Grip Kit, which is also suitable for the Insta360 Ace Pro (currently priced at $279 on Amazon). As shown in the video below, either action camera fits into this new accessory, and a wrist strap is included to help keep it secure while shooting with one hand.

    Enhanced Functionality

Insta360 has added a special cold shoe shutter button that enables the Ace Pro 2 to function like a traditional compact camera. However, to adjust any settings, users will need to go back to the Ace Pro or Ace Pro 2’s touchscreen. Additionally, the Xplorer Grip 2 comes with three mounting points for attaching extra accessories.

    Pricing Options

You can purchase the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 Xplorer Grip Kit separately for $84.99. Alternatively, Insta360 offers the Xplorer Bundle for $419 for the single battery version and $439 for the dual battery option. To give some context, these prices are just above the Standard and Get-Set bundles available for the Ace Pro 2’s configurations.

Insta360 Ace Pro 2: New Action Camera to Compete with GoPro, DJI

The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 is finally on the way. While competitors like DJI and GoPro released their new action cameras during the summer, Insta360 has been rather quiet about its plans for action cameras. This silence continued even after many leaks surfaced throughout August and September.

    Exciting New Leaks

As DJI prepares to launch a new drone in just one day, leaker Igor Bogdanov has shared some never-before-seen images of the Insta360 Ace Pro 2, along with additional specifications. The images shared seem to be what Insta360 and its retail partners intended to use for marketing purposes.

    Impressive Specifications

The hardware of the Ace Pro 2 shows off some notable features, such as a 157-degree field of view (FoV) and a new 1/1.3-inch camera sensor. Additionally, the camera will include updated microphone technology, which is likely enhanced by Insta360’s new ‘5 nm AI chip’. This will also be paired with a somewhat unclear ‘Pro Imaging Chip’. It’s still unknown when the Ace Pro 2 will be ready to compete with the Hero 13 Black or Osmo Action 5 Pro (currently priced at $379 on Amazon). However, the recent promotional material suggests that an official launch is coming soon.

    Insta360 Ace Pro 2 Specs Leaked: 50MP, 5nm AI Chip, 2x Zoom

Newly uncovered details from @Quadro_News provide a comprehensive look at the upcoming Insta360 Ace Pro 2 action camera. These details build on prior leaks, confirming standout features such as 8K video recording, a sensor developed in partnership with Leica, and the inclusion of dual AI chips. This camera is expected to be water-resistant up to 33 feet and shock-resistant from a height of 5 feet. It is designed to operate in a wide temperature range from -4°F to 113°F, allowing it to be used in both chilly and hot conditions. Below are the leaked specifications:

    Camera Specifications

The device boasts a 50-megapixel sensor and can record video in 8K resolution (4320p). According to @Quadro_News, the Ace Pro 2 will utilize a 5nm AI chip, which aims to enhance image processing, camera performance, system operations, and firmware functions. It features a 1/1.3” (9.6 x 7.2mm) image sensor, with 2x digital zoom and an f/2.6 aperture, providing more versatility for various shooting scenarios. Additionally, its focal length ranges from 13mm to 35mm, making it suitable for both wide-angle and zoom shots.

    Additional Features

In addition to its core capabilities, the Ace Pro 2 supports slow-motion recording at up to 240fps and includes an HDR mode for improved dynamic range. Weighing just 0.39 pounds, it is only slightly heavier than the GoPro Hero 13 Black, which is currently priced at $399 on Amazon. The camera also features Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for wireless connectivity, and includes a microSD slot for storage, although it does not come with a memory card.

    Design and Pricing

The specifications also indicate that the Ace Pro 2 has a tripod-mountable design and measures 2.8 x 2.0 x 1.2 inches. Recent leaks have suggested potential pricing for the action camera, as well as a significantly larger rear panel compared to its predecessor. On paper, this combination of features positions the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 as a strong competitor against newly launched models from GoPro and DJI, especially with its impressive 8K recording capability. With many details now revealed, an official launch date is expected to be announced soon.

  • Insta360 Ace Pro 2 Leaks: Upgrades Rival GoPro Hero 13 & DJI Osmo 5

Insta360 Ace Pro 2 Leaks: Upgrades Rival GoPro Hero 13 & DJI Osmo 5

Both DJI and GoPro have introduced new action cameras this month. DJI has launched the Osmo Action 5 Pro, while GoPro has unveiled the Hero 13 Black and the more affordable Hero, which is currently priced at $199.99 on Amazon. Reports suggest that Insta360 is also preparing to announce a new model soon.

Early Details on the Ace Pro 2

At the beginning of the month, initial information regarding the Ace Pro 2 surfaced through hands-on leaks. Recently, multiple sources have provided a first glimpse of the retail packaging, which we have included below. It appears that Insta360 is focusing significantly on the camera’s ability to record in 8K video resolution, a feature that both the Hero 13 Black and Osmo Action 5 Pro do not possess.

    Key Features and Performance

The leaked retail packaging indicates that the Ace Pro 2 will support a maximum of 30 FPS when recording in 8K at a 16:9 aspect ratio. Additionally, the same image suggests that the camera can operate for over 3 hours on a single charge while capturing 8K/30 FPS footage. To achieve smoother 60 FPS video, however, it may need to lower its resolution.

Currently, it is uncertain if the Action Pro 2 will be able to deliver this at 4K like its predecessor or offer a higher resolution, such as 5.3K. The label of the Action Pro 2 as an "AI-Powered Action Cam" hints that Insta360 could be incorporating certain algorithmic techniques to improve image quality in various ways. Unfortunately, the release date and pricing details for the Ace Pro 2 remain unknown.
