Huawei Pura 70 Series Shipments Surge 125% YoY Over P60 Series

Huawei introduced the Pura 70 series this April, featuring a new Kirin processor. Recently, a Huawei insider revealed that the series’ shipment volume has soared by 125% year-on-year in comparison to the P60 series.

According to market research firm TechInsights, the Mate 60 Pro’s shipments in China reached 6.2 million units within just five months of its release. The report also anticipates that the Pura 70 series will surpass 10 million units in shipments by 2024.

    Model Variants and Specifications

The Pura 70 series includes four models: the Pura 70, Pura 70 Pro, Pura 70 Pro+, and Pura 70 Ultra. While the Pura 70 is equipped with the Kirin 9000S1 chipset, the other models feature the Kirin 9010 chip.

The base model sports a 6.6″ screen, whereas the other models boast a slightly larger 6.8″ display. These are LTPO OLED panels capable of displaying 1 billion colors and have a peak brightness of 2500 nits. Each model comes with an aluminum frame and an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.

    Camera Features

Regarding camera capabilities, all main cameras across the three models feature variable apertures and Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). The Pura 70, Pura 70 Pro, and Pura 70 Pro+ include a 1/1.3″ 50MP main sensor. The Ultra model, however, is equipped with a larger 1″ type sensor for its main camera.

  • Huawei Pura 70 Satellite: New Kirin 9010E, Geekbench Scores Revealed

Huawei Pura 70 Satellite: New Kirin 9010E, Geekbench Scores Revealed

Huawei launched the Pura 70 smartphone back in April in its home market. The device subsequently made its way to global markets, including Europe and Malaysia. The brand has now introduced the Huawei Pura 70 Beidou Satellite Messaging Edition smartphone, which, as the name implies, can send and receive SMS via satellite.

A couple of posts on Weibo from tipster WHYLAB have revealed more details about this new device. According to the tipster, the Huawei Pura 70 Satellite SMS Edition, also referred to as the Huawei Pura 70 Beidou Satellite Messaging Edition, is powered by the Kirin 9010E chipset. For context, the original Pura 70 is equipped with a Kirin 9000S1 SoC.

    Chipset Details

This new chipset features a 12-core architecture (8 cores, 12 threads), which includes two 2.19GHz large cores, six 2.18GHz medium cores, and four 1.55GHz small cores. In terms of graphics, it utilizes Huawei’s self-developed Maleoon 910 750MHz GPU. The tipster also shared the Geekbench score of the Kirin 9010E chip on the Huawei Pura 70 Beidou Satellite Messaging Edition 12GB RAM model. It achieved 1358 points in the single-core test and 4343 points in the multi-core test of Geekbench 6.2.2.

    Performance Insights

The device’s performance appears to be slightly less robust compared to the standard Pura 70 smartphone. This is likely due to the fact that the Kirin 9010E chip’s large cores are clocked about 120MHz lower than those of the Kirin 9000S1. Nonetheless, the performance difference is not substantial enough to impact daily usage. The remaining specifications are identical to those of the regular Pura 70 model.

  • Huawei Pura 70: 33 China-made Components, Highest for the Brand

Huawei Pura 70: 33 China-made Components, Highest for the Brand

While the initial reports suggesting that Huawei Pura 70 phones have 90% of their components sourced from Chinese suppliers were inaccurate, TechInsight’s latest analysis points out that these phones indeed boast a notable quantity of locally sourced semiconductors.

    Significant Local Sourcing

TechInsights' analysis indicates that a majority of the components in the Pura 70 series are of Chinese origin. The base model of the Pura 70 series exhibits the highest dependency on Chinese parts, with 33 out of 69 components sourced domestically, as opposed to just five from non-Chinese suppliers.

The Pura 70 Ultra stands out for using memory exclusively from Yangtze Memory Technologies Corporation (YMTC), which is a leading NAND memory producer in China and is currently under US sanctions.

“The ratio of Chinese-procured components was higher in the standard Pura 70 than in the Pro Plus model,” stated Stacy Wegner, an analyst at TechInsights.

HiSilicon Kirin Chips and US Sanctions

An earlier TechInsights analysis disclosed that the HiSilicon Kirin chips powering the Pura 70 series are produced by Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), China’s largest chipmaker. This aligns with the production process used for Mate 60 chips, all employing the same 7-nanometer technology.

Huawei’s shift towards reduced reliance on foreign manufacturers is a notable achievement for the company, especially given the stringent restrictions imposed by the US.

Recently, the US revoked chip export licenses for Huawei from Qualcomm and Intel, further constraining access to these products. However, analysts suggest that this move will have a minimal effect on Huawei’s operations, citing the company’s existing capabilities in producing 4G and 5G chipsets for various phone models.

    Future Outlook for Huawei

“We don’t expect the revoked licenses to significantly affect Huawei’s smartphone business in 2024,” commented Linda Sui, a senior analyst at TechInsights.

Huawei Moves Towards 100% Domestic Smartphone Production

Huawei’s latest flagship, the Pura 70 series, has achieved a major milestone by incorporating over 90% of its components from Chinese suppliers, except for the primary camera in the highest-end model. This move represents a substantial shift towards greater self-sufficiency in Huawei’s smartphone production.

Chinese Smartphone Manufacturing Progress with Huawei Pura 70

Analyses conducted by the Japanese research firm Fomalhaut Techno Solutions during teardowns have unveiled that key components for most models in the Pura 70 series are now being provided by Chinese companies such as OFilm, Lens Technology, Goertek, Csun, Sunny Optical, BOE, and Crystal-Optech. These components include processors, displays, chassis, batteries, and more.

    Advancements and Challenges Ahead

The top-tier Pura 70 Ultra model continues to rely on foreign technology for its most advanced processor (Kirin 9010) and main camera due to current limitations in wafer fabrication. However, with ongoing progress in chip manufacturing and camera innovations, achieving complete self-sufficiency in this regard seems plausible in the near future.

    Market Impact and Future Outlook

Both Honor and Huawei have garnered significant popularity in the Chinese market, clinching the leading position in smartphone market share, as per IDC’s Q1 2024 report. The soaring demand for the Pura 70 series has resulted in stock shortages across major channels and subsequent price hikes in the secondary market.

Forecasts within the industry anticipate a robust performance from Huawei this year, with potential smartphone shipments hitting 50 million units. The Pura 70 model is anticipated to play a substantial role in propelling this success, with sales projections exceeding tens of millions.

The Pura 70 series symbolizes a noteworthy stride towards complete domestic production for Huawei, demonstrating the increasing capability of Chinese suppliers to furnish vital smartphone components while relying on only a few high-end imported elements.

This evolving trend hints at a future where the entire smartphone manufacturing process within China could be fully nationalized, potentially influencing the global smartphone supply chain and reshaping the industry landscape.
