A Modular Arcade Controller from Retro+

Just a few days after JunkFood Custom Arcade announced its modular arcade controller, another brand has shared a teaser for its own modular arcade controller. The new controller is made by Retro+, a sub-brand of Haute42, a Hong Kong-based technology company, and it seems like they are trying to offer a alternative to the Slider.

    Design and Layout Flexibility

The controller is expected to launch as the HauteBox One, according to a short teaser video posted on X. Other than the name, the video also shows the controller in two designs. First, the controller appears with a leverleless layout, and then the video glitches and the controller is shown with a stick on the left. It is believed this implies that users will be able to switch between the two layouts, rather than having to purchase two separate controllers, which would be a big selling point for fighting game fans.

    Visual and Technical Specifications

In addition, in-a-blink and you miss it moment, the video shows the controller will have red directional buttons while the rest of the buttons are black. It is also shown that each button has an RGB LED, which should give it a nice aesthetic. Unfortunately, no technical details have been provided, like for example the exact button size or connection type. However, the video says the controller, which is a spiritual successor to two Evo award-winning products, will launch this summer, so we don’t have to wait too long.

    Pricing Comparison

We will have to wait until its announcement to see if it is cheaper than JunkFood Custom Arcade’s Slider modular controller, which will be available to pre-order on Friday, June 26 for $129, but will cost $149 when it launches. This gives Retro+ a chance to undercut that price if they can manage it, but without any official word, its all speculation right now. The fighting game community will be watching closely for more details.
