  • Nubia Neo 5 Max: A Nostalgic Look at Classic Phablets

Nubia Neo 5 Max: A Nostalgic Look at Classic Phablets

    Key Takeaways

    1. The Huawei Mate 20X gained a loyal fanbase despite being seen as a secondary option to the Mate 20 Pro upon its 2018 launch.
    2. Nubia’s Neo 5 Max features a massive 7.5-inch screen, making it the largest smartphone available, designed specifically for gamers.
    3. The Neo 5 Max has mid-range specifications with a Dimensity 7080 chip, 7,100 mAh battery, 8 GB RAM, and 256 GB storage, highlighting its budget-friendly nature.
    4. There is a potential gap in the market for large flagship smartphones, as upcoming models from other brands suggest a growing interest in larger devices.
    5. Compact flagships are experiencing a decline globally, while larger phablets may see a revival in popularity, especially in China.

It’s not hard for us to see how popular a device is among people, and the Huawei Mate 20X was surprisingly popular when it launched in 2018. Even though it seemed like a secondary option compared to the top-tier Mate 20 Pro, the Mate 20X still built a loyal fanbase. Now, after eight years, a sort of successor might finally be on the scene.

    Nubia’s New Release

Nubia has just unveiled the Neo 5 Max, a new smartphone aimed at gamers. The “Max” label is no joke, since the Neo 5 Max showcases a huge 7.5-inch screen, making it the largest smartphone on the world stage. Although companies like Oukitel and Cubot also produce large phones, they are primarily available in China and generally have inferior hardware compared to the Nubia Neo 5 Max.

    Specifications and Performance

The Neo 5 Max is more of an average offering, as we noted in our first report. While it’s meant to be a gaming phone, it runs on the upcoming mid-range Dimensity 7080 chip. Other features include a 7,100 mAh battery, 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage, a 50 MP primary camera, and a 3x optical zoom lens. Active cooling and shoulder triggers highlight the Neo 5 Max’s gaming focus.

In contrast to the Mate 20X, which aimed to be a true premium device, the Neo 5 Max comes as a more budget-friendly choice, which is unfortunate. Generally, flagship devices max out around 6.9 inches, and some might say there’s a gap in the market for real large flagship phones. This might not just be wishful thinking: upcoming models like the Vivo X300 Max and Xiaomi 17 Max suggest that manufacturers are ready to roll out entry-level flagships in bigger sizes, simply to attract fans of larger devices.

    The Return of Compact Flagships

On the flip side, compact flagships are making a comeback, at least in China. Global models like the Asus Zenfone, Sony Xperia 5, and Apple’s iPhone Mini have all been discontinued, likely due to poor sales. Perhaps the revival of phablets will perform better in the market.

    Infinix GT 50 Pro 5G: Mid-Range Phone with 8 Cortex-A725 Cores

    Key Takeaways

    1. Infinix is set to launch the GT 50 Pro 5G, targeting gamers with its design and features.
    2. The device features a 6.78-inch AMOLED display with a 144 Hz refresh rate for smooth visuals.
    3. It is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8400 Ultimate chip, balancing performance and cost.
    4. The GT 50 Pro is expected to have 12 GB of RAM and storage options of 256 GB or 512 GB, but lower camera specifications compared to the Note 60 Ultra.
    5. The battery capacity is anticipated to be 6,500 mAh for the Chinese version and 6,150 mAh for the European version, with fast and wireless charging options.

Infinix is gearing up to unveil the GT 50 Pro 5G alongside the Infinix Note 60 Ultra. Recently, PassionateGeekz shared the initial pictures of this mid-range device, which is designed with gamers in mind. The Infinix GT 50 Pro features an eye-catching look, showcasing a carbon-like back and vibrant green LED lights.

    Specifications Overview

When it comes to specifications, Infinix has chosen a 6.78-inch AMOLED screen that offers an impressive refresh rate of 144 Hz. Powering the GT 50 Pro is the MediaTek Dimensity 8400 Ultimate, a 4 nm ARM chip that includes eight ARM Cortex-A725 performance cores. Four of these cores function at lower speeds to replace standard efficiency cores, providing a great balance between price and performance, as shown in AnTuTu benchmark scores.

    Memory and Camera Features

The device is rumored to come with 12 GB of RAM and storage options of 256 GB or 512 GB. In contrast to the Infinix Note 60 Ultra, the GT 50 Pro seems to downgrade its camera features, featuring just a 13 MP front-facing camera, a 50 MP primary camera, and an 8 MP ultrawide lens. The Chinese version is said to include a 6,500 mAh battery, while the European edition is likely to come with a slightly smaller 6,150 mAh dual-cell battery. Charging methods will consist of USB-C with a maximum output of 45 watts and wireless charging at 30 watts. Currently, details about the release date and pricing for the Infinix GT 50 Pro remain unclear.

PassionateGeekz has provided a sneak peek into what could be an exciting launch for gamers and smartphone enthusiasts alike.

    2. It has a unique transparent back design with customizable RGB lighting and holds multiple IP certifications for dust and water resistance.

    3. The device features a 6.78-inch Samsung M14 LTPS OLED display with a high refresh rate of 165 Hz, peak brightness of 1,000 nits, and is protected by Crystal Armor Glass.

    4. Equipped with advanced gaming capabilities, the Neo8 includes a Geek Performance Panel for hardware control and supports local running of verified PC games.

    5. The camera system boasts a 50 MP main sensor and a robust 8,000 mAh battery with 80 W SuperVOOC fast charging, available in China starting at 2,599 yuan ($373).

Realme has recently launched the Realme Neo8 in China. Unlike its predecessors in the Neo series, which generally target the mid-to-high-end market, the Neo8 enters the premium segment with the innovative Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 platform and a high-capacity silicon–carbon battery.

    Design and Build Quality

The Realme Neo8 showcases a transparent back design that includes RGB lighting features, and it will be available in three color variants: Cyber Purple, Origin White, and Mecha Gray. As stated by the company, the rear panel employs a multi-layer 3D partitioning technique that creates various texture depths for light-refraction effects. An RGB “Awakening Halo” lighting strip is built into the back and can be customized for notifications, music playing, and gaming effects.

Additionally, the Neo8 sports a metal frame with a glass back, complemented by slim, symmetrical bezels and rounded corners. Impressively, the device holds IP66, IP68, and IP69 certifications, making it resistant to dust and capable of withstanding high-pressure and high-temperature water exposure—something rare among consumer smartphones.

    Display Features

The Neo8 is equipped with a 6.78-inch Samsung M14 LTPS OLED display that is tailor-made for this phone. The screen boasts a touch sampling rate of 3,800Hz and a native refresh rate of 165 Hz. Realme asserts that this configuration lowers power usage compared to standard 144 Hz displays, thanks to the efficiency of the M14 luminescent material. The display reaches a peak brightness of 1,000 nits and a local peak brightness of 6,500 nits, achieving up to 103% P3 color gamut coverage at elevated brightness levels. To ensure durability, the display is shielded by Crystal Armor Glass, and an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor is embedded beneath the screen.

    Performance and Gaming Features

At its core, the Neo8 operates on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 mobile platform, paired with LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.1 storage. To address the thermal needs of the new chipset, Realme has introduced a high-airflow cooling system alongside a special GT Performance Engine that aims to enhance frame-rate stability during gaming.

For power users, the Geek Performance Panel is a significant feature. This interface provides options to manually adjust CPU and GPU frequencies and includes five distinct temperature control levels, offering a level of hardware control usually found in rooted devices.

Realme is advertising the Neo8 as a hybrid gaming device. It features a PC Handheld Mode that supposedly enables the local running of verified PC games. The company claims that over 50 titles are supported, with cross-platform compatibility allowing for PC account logins and cloud-save synchronization for officially licensed games.

The device is also equipped with AI Expert Assistance, which delivers contextual in-game help, such as automatic item pickups in open-world games and cooldown tracking for skills in MOBA titles.

    Camera and Battery Specifications

The camera system is led by a 50 MP Sony IMX896 main sensor (1/1.56″) with OIS and an f/1.8 aperture. Additionally, a 50 MP periscope telephoto camera based on the Samsung JN5 sensor offers 3.5× optical zoom, 7× lossless zoom, and digital zoom up to 120×, supported by AI-based text recognition and perspective correction. An 8 MP ultra-wide camera rounds out the rear configuration, while the front houses a 16 MP selfie camera.

One impressive feature of the Neo8 is its robust 8,000 mAh battery. By using a 16% silicon-content anode, Realme claims to have improved energy density by 3% over past models, allowing this large battery to fit within an 8.3 mm thick chassis. The phone supports 80 W SuperVOOC fast charging and bypass charging, which allows it to draw power directly from the charger during gaming, helping to minimize battery heat buildup.

    Availability and Pricing

Currently, the Realme Neo8 is exclusively available in the Chinese market, with the base model of 12 GB + 256 GB starting at 2,599 yuan (about $373). The high-end 16 GB + 1 TB model is priced at 3,899 yuan (approximately $559). Realme has not disclosed any intentions for a global launch under the Neo or GT Neo branding.

The Pocket Play is on its way as Ayaneo’s new gaming smartphone. This marks the brand’s first venture into smartphones, having earned recognition for its Android gaming handhelds. Recently, Ayaneo has shared more information about the phone, drawing inspiration from the Sony Xperia Play.

A poster shared on their social media indicates that the Ayaneo Pocket Play will feature a 6.8-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2400 x 1080. This screen size is slightly larger than that of the ASUS ROG Phone 9 Pro, though both share the same resolution.
