  • Ayaneo Pocket Play hands-on video revives Sony Xperia Play

    Key Takeaway

    – Ayaneo Pocket Play is a smartphone inspired by the Sony Xperia Play with a sliding landscape display.
    – It features touchpads replacing analog sticks, a D-pad, face buttons, and four shoulder buttons for gaming.
    – The device has a high-quality hinge but is bulky, with a 6.8-inch OLED display and thick build.
    – It uses a MediaTek Dimensity 9300 processor and a 165 Hz OLED display, positioning it as a premium mid-range device.
    – No release date or price has been announced yet.

Ayaneo have so far been known primarily for gaming handhelds, but with Pocket Play, the manufacturer will soon be launching a smartphone on the market that was obviously inspired by the Sony Xperia Play. The design has many similarities, first and foremost a sliding mechanism. This allows the display to be pushed upwards when the smartphone is held in landscape format.

    Unique Design and Controls

Two touchpads, which replace analog sticks, as well as a D-pad and face buttons are hidden under the screen. In combination with four shoulder buttons, not only retro games can be played via emulators, but also modern Android titles and game streaming services. While Ayaneo Pocket Play has so far only been seen in videos from the manufacturer, PCWorld was able to try out the gaming smartphone at Computex and publish the hands-on video embedded below.

    Performance and Build Impressions

According to PCWorld, the round touchpads work surprisingly well as a replacement for analog sticks. The hinge looks high-quality, but the Ayaneo Pocket Play is a little bulky. On the one hand, the device is not particularly small with a 6.8-inch OLED display, and on the other hand, the Pocket Play is extremely thick due to the hinge and the dedicated buttons. Ayaneo also makes compromises when it comes to the cameras.

Ayaneo has not yet confirmed when or at what price the Pocket Play will be launched on the market. With a MediaTek Dimensity 9300 processor, the 165 Hz OLED display and the unusual design, the device could turn out to be as expensive as premium mid-range smartphones.

Ayaneo is developing several new gadgets, and one of them is the Pocket Play, which draws inspiration from the Xperia Play. This gaming smartphone is part of the Remake series and was first unveiled in early December 2025. Since then, the brand has provided details about the SoC and display, and recent teasers have given us more insight into the device.

    New Color Options

One exciting update about the gaming phone is that it will come in three color choices. Earlier, Ayaneo presented the Pocket Play in black and white shades. Now, they have officially unveiled a stylish red variant.

    Innovative Features

Additionally, the company has announced that the Pocket Play is equipped with an 0815 X-axis linear motor that features four vibration modes, promising an engaging haptic feedback experience. As previously mentioned, the gaming phone is powered by the Dimensity 9300, which many consider to be a rather underwhelming chipset choice for the device.

    Cooling System

On a brighter note, Ayaneo has recently disclosed that the SoC is complemented by a performance-oriented air cooler. This cooling system is designed to keep heat away from the grip area, ensuring gamers have a pleasant experience.

Among other specifications, the device includes a USB 3.2 Gen Type-C port that supports DisplayPort 1.4. For wireless capabilities, in addition to the SIM card slot, the gaming phone features WiFi and Bluetooth 5. Users can also augment the Pocket Play’s storage through a dedicated microSD card slot (512 GB Samsung P9 currently priced at $79.99 on Amazon).

    Display and Controls

For those who didn’t catch the previous announcements, Ayaneo has stated that the Pocket Play will feature a 6.8-inch OLED display, boasting a resolution of 2400×1080 pixels and a refresh rate of 165 Hz. Ayaneo Unveils Pocket Play: Xperia Play-Inspired Gaming Device

    Key Takeaways

    1. Ayaneo introduced the Pocket Play, inspired by the Xperia Play, but provided limited initial details.
    2. The device features the Dimensity 9300 SoC from MediaTek, a choice that surprised some due to recent advancements in gaming emulation.
    3. Many believe the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 would have been a better choice for superior performance in emulation tasks.
    4. The Pocket Play includes slide-out controls with tactile feedback and a smart touchpad designed for accuracy, though physical joysticks are preferred for a better experience.
    5. The crowdfunding phase for the Pocket Play is postponed to improve customer support, with a possible launch in the first half of 2026.

Ayaneo has introduced the Pocket Play, which is a new member of its Remake series, and as the company has shown before, it takes inspiration from the Xperia Play gaming phone. However, during its first reveal, there wasn’t much detail shared about this device.

    Display and SoC Update

In late December 2025, Ayaneo disclosed the display specifications of the gaming phone, and now the system-on-chip (SoC) details have been officially shared. The Pocket Play comes equipped with the Dimensity 9300, a top-tier MediaTek chip from 2023. While this SoC choice could surprise some, the advancements in Mali emulation and gaming have seen a noticeable improvement in recent months.

    Performance Considerations

That being said, it would have been preferable to see the Pocket Play use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which is Qualcomm’s flagship SoC for the same year. With superior GPU driver support, this alternative chip would likely enable better performance in emulation tasks.

Ayaneo’s teaser announcement emphasized the slide-out controls of the gaming phone. The ABXY and D-pad buttons are designed to provide tactile feedback, while the smart touchpad can function like a virtual joystick, which is claimed to be finely tuned for accuracy. Of course, physical joysticks would still provide a more satisfying experience overall (like those on the 8bitDo Ultimate mobile controller that currently retails for $39.99 on Amazon).

    Launch Timeline

Currently, there isn’t an official launch date for the Pocket Play, but Ayaneo has recently stated that the crowdfunding phase for the gaming phone is postponed. This delay is attributed to the company’s desire to revamp its operations, particularly with a focus on improving customer support. Given that most of the key specifications have been unveiled through recent teasers, it’s probable that Ayaneo will roll out the gaming phone in the first half of 2026.

    2. The smartphone features a 6.8-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2400 x 1080.
    3. It boasts a high refresh rate of 165Hz, surpassing competitors like the RedMagic 11 Pro.
    4. The design includes a thicker chin and a top bezel for the front camera and speaker, avoiding a punch hole.
    5. A Kickstarter campaign for the Pocket Play is upcoming, and Ayaneo is also developing a gaming tablet called the Ayaneo Gaming Pad.

The Pocket Play is on its way as Ayaneo’s new gaming smartphone. This marks the brand’s first venture into smartphones, having earned recognition for its Android gaming handhelds. Recently, Ayaneo has shared more information about the phone, drawing inspiration from the Sony Xperia Play.

    Display Details

After revealing the design a few weeks back, Ayaneo has provided significant insights regarding the phone’s display. A poster shared on their social media indicates that the Ayaneo Pocket Play will feature a 6.8-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2400 x 1080. This screen size is slightly larger than that of the ASUS ROG Phone 9 Pro, though both share the same resolution.

    Gaming Performance

As one would expect from a gaming smartphone, the Ayaneo Pocket Play boasts a high refresh rate of 165Hz. This gives it an advantage over the RedMagic 11 Pro, which can be found on Amazon.de for €829 and has a refresh rate of only 144Hz.

    Design Insights

In addition to display specs, Ayaneo has also shown an image of the phone during use, revealing a notable design aspect. In the image, the Ayaneo Pocket Play appears to have a thicker chin compared to modern smartphones. It also shows that the display lacks a punch hole for the front camera; instead, Ayaneo has chosen to have a thicker top bezel that accommodates the camera and speaker.

Although the Pocket Play is not expected to be released until next year, Ayaneo has set up a Kickstarter page for this gaming smartphone. This is not unexpected, since Ayaneo has always relied on crowdfunding for their products. The campaign is not live just yet, but it should be soon.

    Future Projects

In addition to this smartphone, Ayaneo is also working on a gaming tablet named the Ayaneo Gaming Pad. However, no new information about this device has been disclosed in some time.
