    Aspyr’s version of Deus Ex Remastered has sparked significant criticism online following its announcement during Sony’s State of Play on September 24, 2025. Numerous fans have expressed their discontent over the newly updated textures, claiming that the character models appear “blocky and incomplete, transforming what might have been a complete overhaul into a downgrade.” Nonetheless, this reaction is largely from the fanbase, as the original art director, Jerry O’Flaherty, also shared his thoughts on the remaster.

    O’Flaherty’s Concerns

    During an appearance on the FRVR Podcast, O’Flaherty did not hold back his negative opinions about the remaster after viewing it. He remarked, “Oh, what the fk. No. This did not need to happen. Sorry to whoever was involved. Oh man, yeah, no. If you’re gonna do it, yeah, alright, why not? Why am I judging?”

    However, this was only the beginning, as he further analyzed the remaster’s approach to realism. He emphasized, “You wanted to lean into what the ending did well and don’t do the sh*t that it doesn’t do well.”

    A Cult Classic

    O’Flaherty referred to the 2000 Ion Storm classic as “one of those rare projects… where the right group of people come together.” He acknowledged Warren Spector and lead artist Jay Lee for combining the strengths of Unreal Engine with Id Tech elements. This collaboration resulted in an engaging cyberpunk simulation that has influenced many stealth shooters even today.

    This announcement comes shortly after the Embracer Group canceled a new Deus Ex project at Eidos Montreal in January 2024, which was just two years into development, leading to the layoffs of 97 workers.

    Development Details

    Deus Ex Remastered is being created by Aspyr, known for their work on games such as Star Wars: Bounty Hunters, early Tomb Raider installments, and Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2. The remaster aims to enhance lighting, shadows, water physics, and particle effects, as well as to revamp textures and character models, while also improving lip-sync for dialogue.

    As of now, Deus Ex Remastered is scheduled to be released on February 5, 2025, for PC, PS5, Xbox Series S|X, and Nintendo Switch. Pre-orders are available on Steam for $26.99, while the original Game of the Year Edition remains priced low at $6.99.

    Despite the extensive backlash from gamers and figures like O’Flaherty, Aspyr Games has yet to respond. With only months remaining before the launch, Aspyr could still adjust character models and textures to satisfy dedicated fans of the original Deus Ex series.
