Patch Updates and Long Waits
It’s been way too long since Path of Exile 2 received a proper update. The last one was Fate of the Vaal (0.4), which dropped in December and has been running for nearly six months making it one of the most lengthy leagues in the game’s history. The wait was def worth it though, cause the upcoming 0.5 update is set to turn everything upside down. Fans are super excited for the ‘end game’ patch, because it promisingly fixes a lot of issues with the endgame that players have been complaining about.
Runes of Aldur Mechanics
The new league mechanic in Path of Exile 2, called Runes of Aldur, centers around runes—harvested from campaign and map areas. It’s like a puzzle where putting certain runes together unlocks new gear, items, and Verisium. The longer you go, the more complicated rune combinations become, which can be hard to remember. So, players can reference a manual similar to the Beastiary from POE1 for help, making gameplay a little less frustrating and more strategic.
Uses for Verisium
Verisium’s a pretty versatile resource in this update. You can use it to upgrade unique items, or equip it onto gear with Runic Ward—an extra layer of defense that prevents death. Or, you could trigger Kalguuran Skills which are akin to the white gems from POE1 but without any stat requirements. They actually work and open up interesting new interactions with the skills you already have, making combat more dynamic and fun.
Endgame Atlas Rework
As GGG hinted, Path of Exile 2’s endgame Atlas is totally reworked. It’s still an infinite map, but now it’s more focused—no more wandering aimlessly. Every league mechanic now has a defined direction, plus there’s a new fortress region. Keys for the Arbiter of Ash are found at specific locations—but don’t expect the Arbiter to be the end boss anymore. We’ll have to wait till early June to know who that ultimate challenge will be.
Atlas Tree and Gameplay Changes
The Atlas tree got a complete overhaul too. Now, the sub-trees are still here, but the main tree itself looks way bigger with more nodes. While GGG didn’t reveal all, it seems like the tree can now be fully filled, but that’s going to take some serious work. In terms of core gameplay, major mechanics like Delirium, Expedition, and Breach are also getting reworked, adding new bosses, quests, and currency options. It’s worth noting that jewel affixes can now be rolled specifically, reducing the randomness of Chaos spam and making crafting more predictable.
New Characters and Items
Sadly, no new classes arrive with Runes of Aldur. But there are two new ascendancies—Spiritwalker for Huntress and Martial Artist for Monks. The Ranger class, however, still hasn’t seen love. There’s a big batch of new unique items too, including one that lets you use a budget version of Righteous Fire. It’s a bit strange that Mageblood is included, as its role isn’t clear in POE2 since utility skills aren’t prominent. Also, Voices has been added, and now you don’t need skill points for jewel slots, which is a nice change.
Next Steps and Release Info
Runes of Aldur marks the last major league for Path of Exile 2 early access. GGG confirmed the game will hit its 1.0 release soon after, with rumors pointing to a late December or early January launch, probably after it’s showcased at ExileCon. For those who love patch notes, they gotta wait until May 21 for a detailed list of buffs and nerfs. The game itself will likely be playable from May 29 onwards, bringing a new era of POE2 for all players.
