Canon’s Latest Firmware Updates for Select Cameras
Canon has recently rolled out a free firmware update for four of its popular cameras, specifically the EOS R1, EOS R5 Mark II, EOS R50 V, and PowerShot V1. Notably, the flagship models, the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II, are benefiting from some pretty significant enhancements that could really improve their performance.
Enhanced Focus and Shooting Features
The most important addition for the EOS R1 and R5 Mark II is the expanded Action Priority AF support. Now, these cameras can recognize American football along with sports like soccer, basketball, and volleyball. This means the cameras can now differentiate specific actions such as ball carries or pass throwing, tracking those objects more accurately. Furthermore, the focus recovery has been improved—if the focus is lost when subjects cross paths or maneuver quickly, the camera can reacquire the focus swiftly, avoiding loss of sharpness.
Improved Subject Recognition & Video Capabilities
- Recognition of pre-registered faces has been enhanced, especially for side profiles and partially obscured faces, making subject tracking more dependable in crowded scenes.
- In video recording, both the EOS R1 and R5 Mark II now support switching to False Color display while View Assist is active, and users can utilize grid and level overlays to assist with framing and shot composition.
Updates for Creators and Remote Control Support
The EOS R50 V and PowerShot V1 have also received useful updates aimed at content creators. These include Review AF, which is available across standard shooting modes—this is especially handy for live commerce or product review videos.
