On the store page for the system, Valve originally advertised “4K gaming at 60 fps.” Now, it reads “up to 4K gaming with FSR 4.1”, a small but significant revision.
Realistic Resolution Expectations
The “up to” phrasing better reflects the Steam Machine performance described in reviews. Less demanding or older titles may run at 4K without frequent frame rate drops. Still, comparable to an entry-level gaming PC, 1080p-1440p is a more reasonable goal. PC users are generally less receptive to 30 fps graphics than console users. Dropping “60 fps” further lowers expectations.
Benchmarks have also illustrated the vital role of FSR on the Linux-based cube. Using AMD’s technology, the system can render compatible games at a lower native resolution before upscaling to 4K.
