Leica Bridges the Gap Between Speed and Resolution

Until now, customers using the Leica SL system have had to choose between the resolution of the Leica SL3 and the speed of the Leica SL3-S. With the Leica SL3-P, Leica now aims to offer an all-around camera that, while not quite matching the SL3’s resolution at 44 MP instead of 60 MP, is said to be significantly faster.

    Advanced Image Stabilization and Autofocus

The sensor is stabilized on five axes and supports a sensitivity range of ISO 50 to 200,000. Leica touts a significantly improved hybrid autofocus system with 819 focus points, capable of continuous focusing even in continuous shooting mode at 40 frames per second. For hybrid photographers, the camera offers numerous video modes, including 8.1K Open-Gate recording at 24 frames per second, 5.8K Apple ProRes, and 4K slow motion at 120 fps.

    Understated Design Meets Professional Durability

Leica has taken a more understated approach to the SL3-P’s design, omitting the red Leica logo. The body is IP54-certified and thus protected against water splashes. The control layout is the same as on the Leica SL3, and this is arguably one of the biggest differences compared to technically similar cameras like the Panasonic Lumix S1RII.

When asked, Leica did not directly deny the rumors that the SL3-P is technically based on the Lumix S1RII, but hinted that not only the feel but also the image quality of the latest camera in the SL system is superior. The user interface clearly distinguishes between photo and video modes with different colors, and now rotates with the camera, allowing for comfortable operation via the touchscreen even in portrait orientation.

    Authenticity Features and Connectivity

The Leica SL3-P supports Content Credentials, which are designed to make it easier for photographers to prove that an image is a photograph rather than an AI-generated image. The camera can connect to the Leica Fotos smartphone app via Wi-Fi 5 and be controlled remotely. Leica has included both an SD and a CFexpress card slot. The camera uses the same BP-SCL6 battery as the Leica SL3, but is said to achieve a significantly longer battery life of 383 photos (CIPA standard).

    Pricing and Kit Options

The Leica SL3-P is available now for a suggested retail price of €5,990. Leica offers a kit with the Vario-Elmarit-SL 28–70 mm f/2.8 ASPH. lens for €6,990. A kit with the Vario-Elmarit-SL 24–70 mm f/2.8 ASPH. costs €7,490, or €9,790 for a kit that also includes the Vario-Elmarit-SL 70–200 mm f/2.8 ASPH.
