  • Sony WH-1000XM6 Headphones Spotted on FCC, Launch Imminent

Sony WH-1000XM6 Headphones Spotted on FCC, Launch Imminent

Three years after Sony launched its flagship WH-1000XM5 headphones, a new model is on the way. The WH-1000XM6 premium headphones have recently been found on a certification platform, giving us a sneak peek into what to expect.

    Design Features of WH-1000XM6

The Sony WH-1000XM6 has been listed on the FCC database with the model number YY2984 (via SmartPrix). This listing reveals some design changes, including a redesigned hinge and removable earpads. The previous model, the WH-1000XM5, debuted in May 2022 and had a mixed reception regarding its design. Sony seems to be working on improvements, but the overall dimensions might stay similar.

    Enhanced Durability and Customization

It looks like Sony is aiming to create a sturdier build for the WH-1000XM6 headphones, and the removable earpads could allow for different color options, enhancing personalization. These headphones are expected to come equipped with Bluetooth 5.3 and Bluetooth LE Audio support. Additionally, a MediaTek chipset could power them, which may enable fast charging capabilities. Known for their excellent sound quality and Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), the WH-1000 series typically offers a premium audio experience.

    Speculations on Launch Date

While there’s no official launch date yet, the confidentiality period for the WH-1000XM6 is set to end on July 22, 2025. This doesn’t necessarily indicate a release date, but given that the WH-1000XM5 came out in mid-2022, it’s possible that the new model could arrive around the same timeframe. However, it’s important to note that this timeline is purely speculative and should be taken with caution. For now, that’s all the information available, so stay tuned for updates.

Sony WF-C710N Earbuds Rumored with Better Battery Life and Upgrades

Earlier this week, The Walkman Blog revealed new information about the WH-1000XM6, which are Sony’s highly anticipated new high-end over-ear wireless headphones. According to recent leaks, the company is planning several wireless audio product launches for 2025, including new models to replace the WF-C700N (currently priced at $119.99 on Amazon).

    Unknown Release Date

At the moment, the launch date for the WF-C710N remains a mystery. These new earbuds have been spotted on listings as being Made for iPhone and iPad (MFi) certified, leading The Walkman Blog to speculate about a possible release timeline. Drawing from the characteristics of existing devices like the LinkBuds Fit, The Walkman Blog thinks that Sony might launch the WF-C710N in May, likely about a month after the WF-C700N turns two years old.

    Expected Features

The WF-C710N is anticipated to come in four different colors and boast over 25% improved battery life compared to its predecessor. These mid-range earbuds might also include touch gesture support, which was absent in the WF-C700N. While active noise cancellation is expected to be featured, the effectiveness of this function is still uncertain at this juncture. It is likely that more information about the WF-C710N and the specific ways Sony has differentiated them from the WF-C700N will become available online in the coming months.

  • HMD Launches First Earbuds with Nokia Lumia-Inspired Case

HMD Launches First Earbuds with Nokia Lumia-Inspired Case

HMD started introducing phones under its own name with the HMD Pulse in April 2024. Now, almost a year and with nine phones later, the company seems to be gearing up to dive into audio accessories too.

New Audio Accessories on the Horizon

This news comes from an FCC filing that shows a TWS earbud called ‘Ampd Buds’ under the HMD brand. The regulatory document highlights the design of the earbuds and their case, alongside color choices and battery details. Let’s explore this further.

    Design and Features

The earbuds themselves have a pretty typical appearance. They come with a flat stem design that connects to a module containing the driver. But the charging case is where things get more interesting. It clearly takes inspiration from the HMD Skyline smartphone, which also nods to the classic Nokia Lumia phones. The color options for the earbuds—Black, Blue, and Pink—are even reminiscent of the HMD Skyline series.

The most fascinating aspect may be the built-in magnets in the charging case. These magnets could enable the case to connect to the HMD Skyline phone (or any wireless charging phone) for reverse wireless charging from the phone to the earbuds. This feature could be quite useful for recharging the earbuds while on the move, especially for those who often forget to bring their charging cables.

    Battery Life and Future Launch

Sadly, the FCC filing does not disclose the precise battery capacity of the charging case. However, the earbuds are said to have 35mAh batteries, which are claimed to offer up to 5 hours of music playback on a single charge.

It’s not yet known when HMD will release these earbuds to the public. But there is a possibility that it could occur during the 19th Mobile World Congress (MWC 2025), where HMD is likely to unveil other gadgets and accessories too.

  • Sony Stops Production of Recordable Media, Ending Blu-ray Era

Sony Stops Production of Recordable Media, Ending Blu-ray Era

Sony has made the big announcement that it will stop producing recordable media by February 2025. This ends the production of Blu-ray Discs, MiniDiscs, and MiniDV cassettes. The company confirmed this news in January 2025, pointing out that the demand for physical media has been going down as digital media becomes more popular.

    What Products Will Be Affected?

The discontinuation affects several Blu-ray recordable formats, including BD-RE and BD-R across 11 different models. Additionally, the MiniDiscs used for audio recordings, such as the “MDW80T” and “MMD-140B,” along with MiniDV cassettes (including the 70-minute versions and multi-packs), will also be discontinued. While there is still some stock available at Sony stores, there are no plans to introduce any replacement products.

    Why Is This Happening?

Sony pointed to the growing popularity of video streaming services, cloud storage, and other digital technologies as the key reasons behind this decision. The company recognized that the market is changing, with physical media being replaced more and more by digital options. The first hints of this shift came in July 2024 when Sony shared its intentions to wind down its storage media business. By January 2025, they confirmed the full stop of production and thanked customers for their loyalty over the years.

What Does This Mean for the Industry?

This move by Sony highlights the fast decline of physical media in a world that prioritizes digital formats. While some fans and collectors might be sad about losing these products, it reflects a broader industry trend towards digital distribution. Sony’s message stressed their appreciation, declaring, “There will be no successor models.”

Sony played a significant role in making Blu-ray technology popular, especially through the PlayStation 3, which served as a cost-effective Blu-ray player. This announcement marks the close of an important chapter in the history of physical storage formats, signifying the ongoing shift in the industry toward digital media.
