Lenovo ThinkPad X9 Leaked: No TrackPoint in Shocking Redesign

In the lead-up to CES, Lenovo seems to be dealing with significant leaks. Previously, the Lenovo Yoga Slim 9 featuring an under-display webcam was disclosed by the leaker “WalkingCat” on Twitter. Now, another line of laptops has surfaced: WalkingCat has shared images of a fresh Lenovo ThinkPad series, the Lenovo ThinkPad X9.

    A New Look for ThinkPads

The pictures depict a dramatically reimagined laptop compared to the conventional ThinkPad style: The new Lenovo ThinkPad X9 appears to abandon the traditional ThinkPad design seen in models like the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 (available on Amazon). It sports a silverish-gray finish instead of the usual black and, most notably, it eliminates the ThinkPad TrackPoint, opting instead for a large touchpad.

    Fans’ Concerns About the TrackPoint

This shift has long been a worry for loyal ThinkPad enthusiasts. The TrackPoint, which is a pointing stick used to navigate the mouse cursor, has been a defining feature of the ThinkPad brand since its launch in 1992. It has been included in nearly all previous ThinkPads, but its presence among other brands has waned in recent years, with Lenovo nearly being the “last man standing.” While the touchpad has overwhelmingly surpassed the TrackPoint in popularity, the TrackPoint’s strong association with ThinkPad’s identity and its dedicated supporters kept it around—until now.

Size and Specs of the X9

It seems like there are two variants of the Lenovo ThinkPad X9: a ThinkPad X9-14 and a ThinkPad X9-15, indicating 14-inch and 15-inch models. “WalkingCat” also hinted at the CPU choice for these laptops, suggesting that Intel Core Ultra processors would be the power source.

Beyond that, not much else can be gleaned from the images. The ThinkPad X9 looks to be a sleek device inspired by the Apple MacBook Air, yet it does come equipped with USB-A and HDMI ports. Additionally, it showcases a newly designed keyboard with altered key-caps and a modified layout that again draws similarities to Apple’s designs. The only design elements it seems to share with other ThinkPad models are the recognizable ThinkPad logo, the smile-shaped keyboard design, and the webcam bump situated above the screen.
