Meta is said to be developing new smart glasses expected to release this year. The company introduced the original Ray-Ban Stories in 2020 and followed up with the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses (Wayfarer curr. $329 at Amazon) in 2023.
New Developments in Wearables
A recent article by Mark Gurman for Bloomberg has revealed that Meta plans to broaden its smart glasses lineup. The project, known as Supernova, aims to make these devices available in more markets. Additionally, Meta is reportedly collaborating with Oakley, a sports eyewear brand, to create new smart glasses. Just like Ray-Ban, Oakley is part of Luxottica. The new model, named Supernova 2, is specifically designed for outdoor sports enthusiasts, such as cyclists, and builds upon Oakley’s Sphaera eyewear.
Premium Offerings on the Horizon
Furthermore, it appears that Meta is also developing high-end smart glasses codenamed Hypernova. This product has been rumored since last year and is believed to be akin to the current Ray-Ban model. However, the upcoming version is expected to include an integrated display that would let users see notifications and photos taken with the built-in camera. According to the report, these glasses are anticipated to be priced at over $1,000. Additionally, Meta’s Reality Labs is reportedly working on other types of wearables, including watches and earbuds with cameras that will feature the Meta AI assistant.
