Path of Exile 2: Grinding Gear Games Reveals Steam Account Hacks

Path of Exile 2 has captured the attention of players thanks to its engaging character customization and intricate combat mechanics. As with many action-RPGs, gamers invest countless hours into leveling up and hunting for rare items. Sadly, some unscrupulous individuals have managed to steal high-level accounts. In a recent chat with streamer Darth Microtransaction, Grinding Gear Games revealed a significant Steam hack that affected 66 accounts.

    Ongoing Security Concerns

Since its early access launch on December 6th, Path of Exile 2 has been beset by security troubles. During his YouTube stream, Darth Microtransaction pressed Game Director Jonathan Rogers for more information on these issues. The investigation is still underway; however, one instance involved a hacker using social engineering tactics to gain access to an admin account. Such approaches typically rely on tricking targets into disclosing private details. The hacker obtained sufficient data to reset the Steam password using account recovery methods.

    Impact of the Breach

Although the compromised Steam account was inactive, it was linked to a current admin account. This connection allowed the hacker to reset passwords for at least 66 players. The individual managed to cover their tracks by erasing any records of the account alterations.

The incident mentioned by Jonathan Rogers actually occurred prior to the public early access launch of Path of Exile 2. The effects are still being felt, with countless forum discussions surrounding stolen accounts, in-game currency, and precious items. Grinding Gear Games has implemented new security protocols, such as separating player accounts from customer support accounts. Yet, these breaches expose the weaknesses of two-factor authentication and serve as a stark reminder that, oftentimes, the user can be the weakest link rather than the system itself.

Path of Exile 2 – Top ARPG Rising on Steam Charts

On December 6, Grinding Gear Games (GGG) introduced their new game, Path of Exile 2, into Early Access. This release comes exactly 11 years after the original game, allowing players to dive back into the dangerous, shadowy realm of Wraeclast. They will face towering bosses, relentless hordes of monsters, and a variety of magical dangers. After the lukewarm launch of its rival, Diablo 4, action RPG enthusiasts have been eagerly waiting for a noteworthy game, and the success of PoE 2 shows just how much they have been looking forward to it. Just three days post-launch, the game soared to the top of SteamDB’s Popular Releases chart, reaching a peak of 578,569 concurrent players, and it now stands as Steam’s best-selling game.

    Class Selection and Story Chapters

In Early Access, players can select from six out of the twelve planned classes and enjoy three of the six story chapters. Staying true to the genre’s roots, the core of Path of Exile 2 is found in its endgame, which is fully available from the start. Players aim to forge their way through massive groups of monsters and powerful bosses, collecting strong gear to confront increasingly challenging tasks. Grinding Gear Games (GGG) seeks to maintain player engagement by adding procedurally generated areas, making sure that each forest or cave feels unique.

    Free-to-Play Model and Supporter Packs

Similar to its predecessor, Path of Exile 2 will be free-to-play when it fully launches. For those who are impatient and don’t want to wait until 2025, there are three supporter packs currently available. These packs provide early access and include in-game currency that matches the value of the pack. The basic pack, available for $30 on Steam, offers 300 points, which can be spent in the in-game store on cosmetic items or enhancements like stash expansions. Right now, Path of Exile 2 can be played on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Path of Exile 2 Early Access Delayed to December Release

Path of Exile 2, the eagerly awaited action RPG from Grinding Gear Games, is set to enter early access in December, pushing back its original November 14 date. Game director Jonathan Rogers shared this news with fans on Path of Exile’s official YouTube channel.

    Apologies and New Date

Rogers expressed his regret, saying he was “really sorry about this one,” while revealing the new early access date of December 6. He mentioned that while the game was progressing well, “service side infrastructure work” has unexpectedly caused the delay in the November launch.

    The Reason Behind the Delay

The complications appear to arise from the commitment to making microtransactions functional between Path of Exile 1 and 2. According to Rogers, to achieve this, the team must “integrate the account systems for not only PoE 1 and 2 but console realms as well.”

    Challenges of Legacy Data

The team faces the task of migrating accounts that have been around for eleven years across both titles and ensuring that “the old data is backwards compatible” with the new systems they have developed for this task. When dealing with data that is this old, it’s likely there are several “skeletons in the closet.”

Rogers emphasized the team’s desire to keep their promise and to make sure “nobody loses anything they paid for.” Consequently, the game will now debut in early access on December 6, 2024.
