Casio has introduced the G-Shock MRGB2000JS1A watch in the US, and pre-orders are currently open for $8,000. This exclusive model is limited to only 110 pieces available in the country, combining classic Japanese artistry with modern watch technology. It was previously launched in Japan as the MRG-B2000JS-1AJR and is anticipated to be available in the UK soon for £6,700, although the precise release date is not yet known.
A Unique Collaboration
This timepiece honors the age-old Japanese sword-making art, created in partnership with master swordsmith Kamiyama Teruhira and lacquer artist Nomura Mamoru. The design draws inspiration from the Juryoku-Maru: San katana, featuring a bezel crafted from recrystallized titanium that resembles the edge patterns found on traditional hand-forged blades. The case is coated in a blue-grey AIP finish, which reflects the polished appearance of a sword’s blade, while the strap showcases aogai-nuri, a lacquer technique embellished with mother-of-pearl inlays, echoing the detailed design of a scabbard.
Individual Touches
Each watch stands out with a unique backplate numbered and engraved by Kamiyama Teruhira himself. The dial displays a hishimaki-gara pattern, which is diamond-shaped and typically associated with sword hilts, and the indexes are subtly designed to mimic the curve of a blade.
Despite its traditional aesthetics, the MRGB2000JS1A is equipped with modern capabilities. It features Bluetooth connectivity that lets users sync it with their smartphones for easy time adjustments. The watch also offers radio-controlled timekeeping for accuracy, powered by Casio’s Tough Solar technology. Additionally, it includes two time zones, automatic hand correction, and a Super Illuminator LED backlight for enhanced visibility in dim conditions.
